Store pickups: what to do when the item doesn't fit in your car

July 28, 20265 min read

Store delivery slots are often days out and priced per item. A truck and driver on demand collects it the same afternoon.

Get the pickup details before you leave the store

Ask for the will-call or customer-pickup entrance, the hours it's staffed, and how long they'll hold the item. Write the order number down. A driver arriving at a loading dock with an order number gets loaded in minutes; a driver sent to the main entrance waits.

Check whether staff will load it

Warehouse clubs, home-improvement stores and furniture showrooms usually load into your vehicle. Smaller shops and marketplace sellers often don't. If nobody at the pickup end can lift, book helper service so your driver isn't solving that alone.

  • Appliances and mattresses: confirm the item is boxed or bagged for transport.
  • Flat-pack furniture: count the cartons — a bed frame is often three separate boxes.
  • Grills and patio sets: ask whether they're assembled; assembled units need a full truck bed.

Book the truck for the window, not the moment

If the store holds the item until closing, schedule the haul instead of requesting it instantly. Scheduling gives nearby drivers time to accept and gets you a firmer arrival window. Either way, the fare is shown upfront and the route is tracked live once a driver takes the job.
