How to move a couch when you don't own a truck

Measure the couch and the exits, in that order

Most failed sofa moves are doorway problems, not truck problems. Before you book anything, write down three numbers: the couch's length, its depth, and its diagonal height when tipped on end. Then measure the narrowest point on the route out — usually a hallway turn or a stairwell landing, not the front door.

If the diagonal height clears the narrowest doorway width, the couch goes through on its side. If it doesn't, the feet come off first. Removing legs buys two to four inches and takes about five minutes with a socket wrench.

Protect the fabric before it leaves the room

Wrap the arms and the back before the couch moves at all. Stretch wrap over a moving blanket keeps upholstery clean through a doorway scrape and a curbside wait, and it stops cushions from sliding out mid-carry.
